Mr. McNamara has been Chief Executive Officer of Cork University Hospital Group since 1992 and has been a member of various national advisory and consultancy bodies for the Department of Health and Children in Ireland including the National Cardiovascular Strategy Group (1998) and Comhairle na nOspideal (2004).
In 2004 he was appointed to the Change Management Team for the Health Service Executive to plan the transformation of the Irish healthcare system and in this role he managed the National Hospitals Office team.
He served for six years until 2006 as a member of the board of the Irish Blood Transfusion Board and was chairman of the Finance Committee of this board for a number of years.
He was a member of the board of the Road Safety Authority from its legal establishment in 2005 until 2010 and chaired the Audit Committee of the board during that period. He has completed an MSc in Management Practice with Trinity College and the Irish Management Institute in Dublin and studied for his Doctorate in Business Administration at Henley Management College & Reading University in London. He subsequently attended Harvard Business School where he studied in 2016-2017.
He was appointed as a member to the Board of the Health Insurance Authority on the 1st February 2016.
